GEAR ENVY: Dell Latitude 12 RUGGED EXTREME

GEAR ENVY: Dell Latitude 12 RUGGED EXTREME

Okay, so a computer is a rather unlikely thing to find on an outdoors blog. But I reckon Dell’s use of “Rugged” and “Extreme” not just to describe, but to NAME this laptop grants it a special status.

Gotta take a pee and the Dell gets caught up in your stream? Not a worry! This beast is IP-65 water resistant!

The Dell has all the good bits. Like Windows 8….*ahem*….and a solid state hard drive (no moving parts!). It also has RAM (up to 16GB of it) and a CPU which is either a top of the range i7, or a lower end i3 depending on how many thousands you want to spend. The screen is all touchy-feely as most things are these days, and it rotates in its frame so that it can be poked and prodded without lifting the lid. They start at a size of 12 inches; not sure if that refers to the screen size or the thickness….(durability comes at a price!)

But really, who gives a hoot about the tech specs; you all just want to know she fares as a frisbee! Well, they didn’t quite do that. Instead they dropped the laptop on a granite boulder an impressive 78 times (they only stopped there because the boulder had been reduced to dust). It also survived a good wash over at the local military testing facility, earning the Dell an IP-65 dust and water resistance rating.

Now for the price. Well, just as this laptop is sized big and chunky just like laptops were in the 90’s, it’s price tag is reflective of the same era. Yup, the base model will set you back a hefty $5,699 while if you want the specced up model with faster processor, more RAM and a larger hard drive you will need a pre-approved loan or sacrifice a kidney to the value of $7,299.

You know you want it. Grab one from Dell HERE but first check out Gear Junkie’s review of the laptop HERE.
